Why Abortion is Actually Healthcare

In Arkansas, politicians — not doctors or patients — are making deeply personal medical decisions for women and families. Arkansans are paying the price for a law that puts ideology ahead of health, safety, and basic freedom. Medical decisions belong in exam rooms — not in state capitols or courtrooms. Arkansans deserve laws rooted in reality and respect for personal healthcare decisions.

What’s happening

We have one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country: 1) no exceptions for rape or incest; 2) doctors face criminal charges for providing care even in emergencies; 3) patients with miscarriages, pregnancy complications, or fatal fetal diagnoses are being denied treatment or forced to travel for care that should be available here at home.

Why it matters

Pregnancy is unpredictable and complications are common. When doctors are forced to consult lawyers instead of using their medical judgment, patients are the ones that suffer. Hospitals are struggling to recruit and retain OB-GYNs. Maternity wards are closing. Rural communities are being left without access to basic reproductive healthcare.

Who suffers

The consequences of Arkansas’s abortion ban fall hardest on those with the fewest resources. But the ripple effects touch all of us through provider shortages and higher risks for anyone who may need emergency pregnancy care. The truth is that a full ban weakens our entire healthcare systems, all because of a law that puts political ideology over medical reality.

What For AR People is doing

We’re working to protect both reproductive freedom and the democratic tools Arkansans use to defend it. For AR People is a member of Protect AR Rights, a citizen-led effort to ensure the people, not politicians, retain the power to decide issues that affect their lives and families. If Arkansans lose the freedom to place issues on the ballot, we lose one of the most effective tools we have to protect healthcare access and accountability in state government.

What you can do

You can help by staying informed, sharing accurate information, and supporting the Arkansas Ballot Measure Rights Amendment. Defending freedom and defending direct democracy go hand in hand. Join us in the fight to protect healthcare, freedom, and dignity for every Arkansan.
