Data Centers and Arkansas: A forthcoming For AR People Report

By May 29, 2026No Comments

At least five data centers have been approved across Arkansas: two in Little Rock, one in West Memphis, one in Conway, and one in Clarkesville. These data centers support and power technologies like artificial intelligence, data collection and management, and other tech that requires immense amounts of data storage and processing power. They’re largely being built by mega-corporations like Google, Amazon, Meta, and various subsidiaries.

But what does this mean for Arkansans? At a moment when prices across the board are rising quickly due to a combination of international conflict, tariffs, and corporate consolidation, citizens are raising questions about the need for these data centers and the effect they will have on our state. Data centers have wide-ranging effects, and some will not be well-understood for years to come.

This is an immensely complex issue, and one that state and local leaders need to take seriously. For AR People will be releasing an analysis of the issue and policy recommendations next week. The report will take stock of the current status of data centers in Arkansas, how current policy affects their construction, and new policy recommendations for legislators that listen to their constituents’ dissatisfaction with the current status quo.
